Preparation
Lipase (Serum) is the pancreas-focused enzyme test — more specific to the pancreas than amylase, and it stays elevated longer, which makes it the preferred enzyme when doctors suspect pancreatitis.
Pancreatitis announces itself with severe upper abdominal pain boring into the back, often with vomiting — sometimes after a heavy meal or alcohol. When that story lands in a clinic, lipase is the test that confirms or dismisses the suspicion. It is also used to monitor known pancreatic conditions and, occasionally, in workups of unexplained abdominal pain alongside amylase.
Like amylase, the test is a simple home blood draw with no fasting needed in most cases. And the same safety rule applies with full force: severe, persistent abdominal pain is an emergency — go to a hospital now, and use home testing for the follow-up workup your doctor plans afterwards.
Lipase is more specific to the pancreas and stays elevated for days longer, which is why most physicians prefer it. Booking both from the same draw gives the fullest picture.
