Serum Iron measures the iron actually circulating in your blood at the moment of the draw — a snapshot of the mineral doing the heavy lifting inside haemoglobin, the molecule that carries oxygen to every cell.
On its own, serum iron tells only part of the iron story — it swings with meals and time of day, which is why doctors almost always order it as part of an Iron Profile with TIBC and ferritin. Read together, they distinguish true iron deficiency from iron overload and from the iron-starvation pattern of chronic inflammation — three conditions that look identical on haemoglobin alone.
Morning collection is preferred because iron levels naturally dip through the day, and fasting gives the cleanest reading. The draw happens at your home; if you take iron tablets, test before the morning dose.
Ferritin shows storage; serum iron shows circulating supply. Together with TIBC they separate deficiency, overload and inflammation-related patterns that look the same on haemoglobin.
